LACLS--Guest Lecturer Cyrus Veeser

The LACLS department will be hosting a lecture on February 11th, 2019 at 6:30pm in Bowen Auditorium.

Dr. Cyrus Veeser will present "Guerrilla Movements in the Dominican Republican:  Margin, Mainstream or In-Between?"

For many years “guerrilla warfare” was widely associated with the political processes across Latin America. Depending on the operative definition of guerrilla warfare, the term could apply to struggles for power among rival caudillos, irregular forces battling foreign occupations, armed resistance to dictatorships, and assassinations and kidnappings carried out by urban militants. Since independence the Dominican Republic experienced each of these variants on guerrilla movements. My talk will provide an overview of guerrilla movements in the Dominican Republic, ask why those movements came about and how they differed, and reflect on the legacies of those movements.
