An Environmental Amendment for Pennsylvania and the Nation

The Story of Pennsylvania’s Article 1 Sec. 27 and the Promise of the Green Amendment

For decades, communities have relied on Federal and State laws to ensure protection of a clean environment. And for decades, while achieving some important successes in environmental protection, overall the health of our environment for present and future generations has continued to degrade. But there is another strategy to consider: what if we turn to our state and federal constitutions?

In a two-part presentation, Franklin Kury will discuss Article 1 Section 27 of Pennsylvania’s constitution, also known as the Environmental Rights Amendment. He will examine its origination, passage through state government, and its continued meaning today. Maya K. van Rossum will then share her vision for Green Amendments for Generations, a nationwide movement to secure constitutional recognition and protection of environmental rights in every state.
