Classified Records: National Security, Declassification, and the Freedom of Information Act

David Fort ’00 has spent the last 17 years making access to records happen. He is responsible for both safeguarding national security and working with the public to help scholars and civilians alike access government documents. He will talk about his career path from Gettysburg College to the National Archives and detail the declassification process and how Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests are handled. Using examples from recently declassified WWII records and documents about General Eisenhower’s leadership he will explain how access to previously restricted information enhances the work of historians and others.
